The word globe comes from the Latin word globus, meaning sphere. The first known mention of a globe was in 150 BCE by Strabo, an ancient Greek geographer, who described the Globe of Crates: whose globe was the first known representation of the Earth.

Early globes were made by gluing a printed paper map onto a sphere made of wood. Modern globes are made of thermoplastic. Flat discs of plastic are printed containing a map of one of the Earth’s hemispheres. After being molded by a machine, this disc is united with its counterpart, forming a complete globe.
