Ancient Rome is the Roman civilization that lasted from the founding of Rome in the eighth century to the fall of Rome in the fifth century. It began as an Italic settlement beside the Tiber River, and became one of the largest and most powerful empires, controlling neighbouring states through a combination of treaties and military strength. At its height, Ancient Rome controlled the North African coast, the Levant, Egypt, southern Europe, the Balkans, Crimea, and Anatolia. It covered around five million square kilometres and had a population of between fifty and ninety million. At the time, this was almost a quarter of the world's population.
