Derived from the extinct Phoenician alphabet, the modern Greek alphabet has been in use since around the eighth century BCE. It is the earliest known alphabetic script to write both vowels and consonants. The earliest form of the Greek language was written in the Linear B script between the sixteenth and twelfth centuries BCE.
