Spoken during the European Middle Ages, Old English (Ænglisc) is the earliest attested form of the English language. It developed from languages brought to Great Britain by Anglo-Saxon settlers in the fifth century, and was replaced for several centuries by Anglo-Norman following the Norman Conquest of 1066.The era of Old English ended in the twelfth century, when it developed into Middle English and Early Scots.
