Sumer was the earliest known civilization, believed to have been settled between 5500 and 3300 BCE. The Sumerians lived in southern Mesopotamia, modern day Iraq, where they grew grains and other crops. They spoke Sumerian language: a language isolate that was written using a logo-syllabic writing system called cuneiform. Sumer consisted of many city-states, divided by canals, and each represented by its own god or goddess. Its population was estimated to be between 1,000,000 and 1,500,000. Sumerian civilization fell around 1900 BCE after being attacked and conquered by the neighbouring Amorite states.
