Elder Futhark is the oldest form of runic alphabet. Runes as an alphabet were first used by the Germanic peoples of Scandinavia during the European Migration Period: a period of large-scale migrations that led to the fall of the Western Roman Empire. It was used to write Proto-Norse ((Ancient Nordic)), existing in common usage between the second and eighth centuries, after which it evolved into the language of Old Norse.
