- The ankh is one of the most ancient Egyptian symbols: associated with life, immortality, divinity, and the afterlife. In Egyptian hieroglyphics, it was used to represent the word for life. It was a trilateral sign: the first to represent a sequence of three consonants. The first known use of the ankh was during the First Dynasty of Egypt, around 30th or 29th century BCE. Ancient Egyptian religions asserted that life was a force which circulated throughout the world, and that individual living things were tied to this force. By extension of its representation of life, the ankh also symbolized water and air.
