Ancient North Arabian (ANA) was a script used in Arabia and Syria between the eighth and fourth centuries BCE. It is an abjad: a writing system in which only consonants are represented. Many scholars believe that the Ancient North Arabian was derived from Ancient South Arabian script. The oldest examples of ANA script date back to the ninth or eighth century, and were found in Syria, Palestine, Mesopotamia, and Luristan (Iran).
