The Egyptian Book of the Dead is a collection of funeral texts composed by priests over a period of about 1000 years, beginning around 1550 BCE. Originally written on papyrus, it consists of various magic spells intended to assist the deceased through the underworld - or Duat, as it was referred to by ancient Egyptians. The Book of the Dead was normally placed into burial chambers of the deceased, who were believed to have been greeted after death by the deity Osiris, god of the afterlife, the dead, and resurrection.
- The Ancient Egyptians created individualized books for specific people upon their deaths. This illustrated version contains scenes from the Papyrus of Ani: an ancient Egyptian scroll dating back to 1250 BCE, narrating the afterlife journey of Theban scribe Ani, and containing spells addressed to the ferrymen, gods, and kings assisting Ani through the journey.
