Consisting of more than 1,000 distinct characters, Egyptian hieroglyphs combined ideographic, logographic, syllabic, and alphabetic elements. They may have emerged from the preliterate artistic traditions of Egypt, such as symbols on archeological pottery. The first full sentence written in hieroglyphs dates back to the Second Dynasty of Egypt (28th or 27th century BCE), where it was found in the tomb of Seth-Peribsen: a pharaoh of the Second Dynasty. As writing developed among Ancient Egypt, glyph forms developed into the hieratic and demotic scripts, which were cursive scripts used for writing formal documents. Hieroglyphs were used during the period of Persian Rule in the sixth and fifth centuries BCE, and during the following Ptolemaic and Roman periods. By the fourth century, most Egyptians could no longer read hieroglyph scripts.Their use rapidly declined after the closing of non-Christian temples by Roman emperor Theodosius I in 391.
